The original City walls were constructed in Roman times, but
little of these remains. The surviving walls pictured here were built by the Normans when
they fortified the city in 1068. It was one of the earliest English cities to be fortified
by William the Conqueror, because of its strategic position with access to sea routes from
the rivers Trent and Humber via old Roman roads. |
