COUNTIES
England, like Wales and Scotland, is divided into regions
known as Counties. These are reasonably small administrative areas, to which
people can feel a reasonably strong sense of identity. There are presently 46
counties in England, although this is influenced by the silly meddling of
politicians. Seven of them are metropolitan areas so don't really count. Also,
Yorkshire has been divided into 31/2, Lincolnshire into 1
1/2 and Sussex into two.
Cumberland & Westmorland have been joined into something called `Cumbria' and
Herefordshire and Worcestershire have also been amalgamated for no apparent
reason. So, if you look at the real historical counties (and count London as one
of them), there are really 38.
So, taking the 38 counties as the base, here are some
pictures of the counties I have been to since coming to England. Over the next
couple of years, we hope to fill in some of the gaps ....
