MACEDONIA

One of the smaller countries in Europe, Macedonia has a population of just over two million. It is largely mountainous, with the capital, Skopje, being situated in a river valley between two mountain ranges. Its proper name is the `former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia', to avoid upsetting the Greeks, who have a province called Macedonia next door. David went there on a very brief business trip in 2007, but managed to snatch a few precious seconds for a minuscule number of photographs.

The castle dates originally from Ottoman times, but was destroyed in an earthquake some years ago. It is in the process of restoration.

Old stone bridge over the (rather shallow) river.

Reminiscent of Mr Bean, the luggage compartment of this Fiat 500 is secured by padlock!
